Exercise Motivation for the Seriously Unmotivated
My husband has excess exercise motivation. He just LOVES to work out! (Don’t you hate him already?) Sometimes he’ll go to the gym twice a day, and he works a full-time job and a part-time job, plus we have two little kids. Exercise motivation is not a problem for him. He could easily make excuses, but exercise is a priority. He enjoys it. And a small side note here: He’s MUCH easier to live with when he gets his exercise. Happier. More Relaxed.
On the other hand, you may not feel such a deep dedication and love, love, love to work out. In fact, since you’re reading this page, chances are good that your level of exercise motivation is near nonexistent. Am I right?
Well, once again I must be the bearer of bad news. There’s no magic pill that will boost you right up to exercise motivation master. If that’s what you’re looking for, you can stop reading right now.
However, if you’d like to know what you can do to help stimulate your exercise regimen, I can give you a few tips. First, though, let me tell you a little something.
I’m a big fan of motivational/success speakers and authors. I tend to lean toward a dry, sarcastic outlook at times (as you may have guessed by reading my articles!), although I’d like to view it as being realistic. Anyway, I do enjoy an inspirational audio cd on occasion for a positive pump-up. Zig Ziglar has one where he discusses a point in his life where he refers to himself as a “fat boy”. He tells the story of how he lost the weight, actually HAD to lose the weight because he had a book coming out telling everyone how they could do anything if they set their mind to it. He couldn’t waddle out on stage and sell his positive message of success and feel good about it, so he determined he must lose a substantial sum of weight. He shares the struggle he went through, getting up early every morning, whilst everyone else in the neighborhood was snug in their beds, only being able to judge his jogging distance in mailboxes, starting out being able to do only one pushup. And what does he have to say about the first few months of the process? “I’ve gotta tell ya, I HATED IT!”
Funny story aside, please note a very important word I said there. PROCESS. You simply have to own up to the fact that you WILL be following a certain exercise regimen and whether you feel like it or not, you do it. At some point, if you are getting the results you should, you will start to feel better about this PROCESS and probably even begin enjoying the journey.
So, I don’t know, in a way I guess exercise motivation, well, maybe it’s a myth. You know you need to do it and you just freakin’ do it. You’ll feel better than if you don’t. If you'd like some tips on
