How to Connect with and Sustain Motivation for Weight Loss Success
Everyone has experienced that moment where they said “I really need to lose weight and get healthy”, but few seem to make it to the other side of the weight loss fence. They get stuck along the way and then retreat backward. As a fitness professional I see it all the time. People often times get fired up short-term, thinking” I’ve got to do something now!” The problem with that is, they’ve never really connected with their true motivation for weight loss.
I see people who are successful, and I also see many that are not. Today I thought I’d share with you the number one reason why most fail. Don’t just read this article then delete it. Forward it to someone you know who isn’t “where they want to be yet”. I hope it can be helpful and inspire them or you to take the action necessary to move forward and accomplish lasting weight loss.
Maybe you missed it. I kindof snuck it in the first paragraph already. The number one reason most people do not get in shape is a lack of motivation for weight loss. I believe that the only reason for a lack of consistent progress is simply a lack of enough motivational reasons to stick with it.
Think about it. It’s certainly not a lack of choice, whether it be what you eat, how you spend your time, or whatever. Look around you. It’s easy enough to find a “motivation for weight loss” inspirational story. Someone who has overcome poor circumstances or extreme obesity and gotten healthy. Everyone knows about Jared, the Subway guy. For goodness sake, the guy wasn’t honestly even eating that healthy and he still succeeded! What he did have was a connection to his motivation for weight loss. You’ve got to have the reasons.
A secret to sustained motivation for weight loss (or achieving any goal for that matter) is more good reasons to be thinner, healthier, etc. That’s why you have to fight to link everything you do to your motivation for weight loss and ultimately all of your goals. Frankly, this isn’t an easy thing to do. When you’re swamped at work, the kids need help with homework, and your husband needs a little “TLC” of his own, it’s hard to muster the energy to remain focused on this goal of losing weight. But that’s EVERYTHING. That’s what actually gets goals achieved. Stay connected to your reasons.
There’s a quote I like that says, “If you are not achieving what you feel you should in life, it is because your goals are not defined well enough.” However, there is still more to it than just defining and refining these goals. You cannot truly be productive without measurement. Measurement gives you a very simple standard for determining, at all times, choice by choice, whether you are taking a step forward or a step back. In other words,
“Is what I’m doing, this minute, moving me measurably closer to my weight loss goal?”

Let’s be reasonable and human for a moment and happily accept that we won’t be able to say ‘Yes’ all the time. That means you do deserve time for a break or fun or junk food. But you want to participate in your down time consciously, by choice, not by accident or other’s direction. I’d say if you can say yes more than 50% of the time, you are on the right track. Just asking the question consistently will increase your level of weight loss success.
