The Trick to Self Motivation Is Not Doing It!
Are you the type of person that says you are going to work out, or diet, and then you ACTUALLY DO? I didn't think so. So what makes you think that you are all of a sudden going to change that?
As you may have surmised, I am not a huge fan of the concept of self motivation. But keep in mind, my experience is in dealing with people who have called me up and want me to show up at their door several times a week and make them work out. It's just so darn easy to get mired down in the details of the day and make no time for eating well and exercising. I know it. In fact, I'm plenty guilty of it myself. So with all my knowledge in the weight loss arena, I'm not an advocate of self motivation for weight loss.
But if you really want to make an effort towards being a self motivator, I can make a few suggestions. A couple other articles on this site may prove useful in developing your self motivation. I think in the end it all boils down to either discipline or accountability.
Can you develop the discipline? If you've tried and failed countless times, then the answer is, sadly, probably not. Hey, don't blame me! I don't want to come off as negative here, really I don't, but what good will it do you for me to inflate you with false hope? However, if you are stubbornly set on attempting once again, well, first of all, don't think of it as TRYING. Change your mindset to DOING and BEING, not trying. Seems like a small distinction maybe, but it isn't. Your mindset, how you think of yourself, especially physically, can be the most vital factor in your weight loss success (or failure).
On the other hand, if you are ready to admit defeat in the self motivation arena, but not ready to give up on losing weight, then get help. Plain and simple. Don't keep trying to go it alone, failing and failing again, getting more and more discouraged and down on yourself. "Help" can vary to great degree. Having a workout buddy may help you. These arrangements never seem to last that long, though. I don't know why. Perhaps not seeing results quickly enough. Going to "meetings" may work. Public humiliation is not my cup of tea, but maybe it motivates you. I've seen more people who just end up not going, though, because they know they didn't reach their goal. Hiring a personal trainer or joining a gym, if you haven't tried it already.
Those are the common sense, ultra conservative, yeah, yeah, you already know suggestions. But a few more options exist that perhaps you aren't aware of. Hypnosis is one. Doesn't work for everyone, but it's an alternative. Hiring a weight loss coach gives some people the accountability they require. Reporting progress ( or lack of it) to someone who can maintain objectivity and keep you on track week-by-week, month after month is a steady, progressive approach to becoming a healthier, thinner person. And thus remain.
Anyway, that's my two cents on self motivation. I guess it wasn't very inspirational, but it's the honest truth according to me. Being truthful to yourself about what you will do on your own might just save you a lot of heartache, money, and time.
